The Tooth Fairy winced as her shoddy knee ground audibly. Her breath came in rattling grunts as she flicked a hated old coin off the child’s face. She took the stinking, under-pillow offering, hoping – praying – this would be the one. The perfect tooth – as if that existed - she’d been searching forever. Damn this immortality. All she wanted to do was die, but as everyone knew the payment for death was perfection. So night after night she flicked a coin off a child’s face and winced as her shoddy knee ground, searching for something she would never, ever find.
