Flash 4: Head Stands

Head Stands
by
Conda V. Douglas

Southerner Grandfather MacDonald lost his leg during the Gettysburg Battle and ever after wore a peg leg.

Grandpa and his Northerner blind wife carried on an un-Civil war. She stood on her head, to bring her sight. Grandpa, seeing his wife's head stands, often escaped to the roof. One day, she popped out of the roof hatch. He slipped on his peg leg, and tumbled off, breaking his neck. His last words: "I knew that Yankee'd get me some day."

We never did know if he meant his wife or the soldier who shot him.
